A closer look at horizontal panel machining, laser sensing and the data needed for a reliable cabinet assembly process.

CNC Side Drilling:Connector Holes, Straight Holes and Slots for Cabinet Panels

01 / Connect the cutting process to cabinet assembly

A cabinet panel needs more than correct outside dimensions. Its connecting holes and slots must also line up with the mating parts. The LEADWOOD CNC side drilling machine is intended for panel-side operations, with documented functions covering three-in-one connector holes, straight holes and slotting. It can form part of a workflow between panel cutting, edge finishing and final assembly.

02 / Understand which holes the machine makes

Three-in-one connector systems use a coordinated pattern of holes across mating components. A side drilling machine handles the operations supported by its horizontal tooling and configuration; this does not automatically mean it makes every face hole required by the connector. Share the complete hardware drawing and identify which operations are already completed by other equipment. This prevents an incomplete production process from being mistaken for a complete solution.

03 / Laser sensing and controlled movement

The reference configuration includes a laser probe and a customized motion-control system. Sensing helps the machine identify the relevant panel information within its supported process. The exact recognition method, data input and compatibility with your upstream production should be demonstrated. Check how the system handles your panel finish, edge band and hole pattern instead of assuming all job data can be transferred automatically.

04 / Spindle, travel and footprint

The published technical data lists a 2.2 kW air-cooled spindle, a spindle speed of 24,000 rpm and an effective stroke of 2,650 mm. Overall dimensions are 3,350 × 1,770 × 1,400 mm. The drive specification lists 750 W and 400 W servo motors. Actual cycle time depends on hole count, spacing, depth, tooling and handling, so a representative part is more useful than a single headline speed.

05 / What to check on a machined sample

Use panels cut and edged through your normal process. Check hole diameter, depth, center position and alignment with the corresponding mating part. For slots, check width, length and the fit of the intended connector or fitting. Assemble a sample cabinet joint to assess the complete result. Repeat the trial on mirrored parts and different panel sizes if those jobs are part of your daily workload.

06 / Prepare for installation and operation

Provide panel material, thickness range, minimum and maximum sizes, connector drawings and the required drilling or slotting operations. Request the supported data-entry method, tooling list, clamping arrangement and utility requirements for the chosen configuration. Allow space for long-panel handling and extraction. Operator training should cover job verification, first-piece inspection and the maintenance procedure specified by the machine supplier.

Discuss your production requirements.

Send your material, workpiece drawings, required configuration and destination country to the LEADWOOD team. Reference specifications are subject to the agreed machine configuration.
